Boom and Bust 2020: Tracking the Global Coal Plant Pipeline

This report is created in collaboration with Global Energy Monitor, Greenpeace Internationl, the Sierra Club, and CREA.

Among the discoveries in “Boom and Bust 2020: Tracking the Global Coal Plant Pipeline“, are that most countries are experiencing a decline in their coal fleet, while in some Asian countries, coal is still increasing. This, in 2019, led to a net capacity addition to the global coal fleet, after a decline since 2015.

The USA saw nearly half (48%) of the global retired coal power capacity at 16.5 GW, with the EU following at 22% less or 7.5 GW of coal power retirements. Excluding China, the global coal fleet dropped in 2019 for the second year in a row.
