Among the discoveries in “Boom and Bust 2020: Tracking the Global Coal Plant Pipeline“, are that most countries are experiencing a decline in their coal fleet, while in some Asian countries, coal is still increasing. This, in 2019, led to a net capacity addition to the global coal fleet, after a decline since 2015.
The USA saw nearly half (48%) of the global retired coal power capacity at 16.5 GW, with the EU following at 22% less or 7.5 GW of coal power retirements. Excluding China, the global coal fleet dropped in 2019 for the second year in a row.
