Dashboard: Health impacts of diesel vehicles suspected of using prohibited defeat devices in the EU and UK

Do you live in the EU or UK? Explore the impacts of dirty diesel emissions in your country

This interactive chart shows the public health and economic impacts of real-world NOx emissions from Euro 5 and pre-RDE Euro 6 diesel vehicles, many of which are likely to contain illegal defeat devices.

How to use this tool

Use the dropdown menu to:

  • Select your country or region of interest.
  • Choose the type of impact to view – e.g. premature deaths or economic costs.

The chart will automatically update based on your selections.

What the chart shows

The bar chart is divided into three time periods:

  • Historical: Impacts that have already occurred.
  • Future: Projected impacts if these vehicles remain in use.
  • Total: Combined past and future impacts.

Each bar is split into:

  • Above Suspicious Threshold: Impacts caused by excess emissions – those likely due to defeat devices.
  • Below Suspicious Threshold: Impacts that would occur even if emissions were within legal limits.

Pollutantants can disperse in the atmosphere and affect communities in neighbouring countries. The data in these charts show the combined impacts from both domestic and transboundary emissions.

Why it matters

This tool helps you:

  • Understand the harm already done by high-emitting diesel vehicles.
  • See the expected future toll if no action is taken.
  • Identify the avoidable harm: If these vehicles were replaced by clean alternatives, we’d expect future impacts to fall to the below-threshold level, meaning all above-threshold impacts could be prevented.
